Week 9: Polish sprint

BOO! (running out of new intro idea's)

This week we started polishing our game, which basically means: make it better without changing any mechanics or breaking anything. We made a big ol' list of things we could improve and chose the most important ones, because we only have 2 weeks. The most important aspects we focused on were player feedback, sound and visuals.

We gave the toilet effects a complete overhaul. There is now a big splash of water with some extra particles when the player flushes a toilet. We may add water on the ground next week.

Our game is mainly played with a controller, so we added controller rumble in different places. Sorry keyboard players, but I haven't found any rumbling keyboards yet. There is a rumble effect when the toilet is flushes, the player calls boo and when the ghosthunter is close to the player. Something might add next week is increasing the rumble strength and make the footsteps of the ghosthunter louder as he gets closer.

Our ghost asked us if he could get some blobs behind him when he moved, so we gave him some, because he asked nicely.

Since we started the projects, the NPCs were frozen in place, but now they have animations! There are animations for walking, running, jumping in the air, pressing a button, sitting on the ground being terrified and the best one: dancing.

The level has moving clouds outside adding to out spooky vibe and the look of the ghosthunter's light was improved.

This week we also added a lot of sounds to our game and threw out the placeholder NPC screams. We gave the NPCs new scream and gasp sounds. Each NPC has 3 different screams and gasps. When an NPC is scared a random scream and gasp is chosen with a random pitch. We did this to make sure the screams would never sound the same. They also have footstep sounds that are way too annoying and need some tweaking.

We made the doors squeak..... skqueek..... squeek........ make a sound, because doors do that sometimes.

There is now an outline close to some objects, indicating to the player that this object can be interacted with.

We also did some bugfixes resulting from the feedback we received last week. The player name wasn't saved on game restart and the menu could become stuck when the player deselected the menu with the mouse. We also added a small text on the gameover screen that indicated you score.

Ghost pun of the week:

Why does that ghost look so sad?

He's been going through a lot of stuff recently.
